HWB: Shakes, Rattles and Rolls

October 23, 2006
An earthquake occurred of the western shore of the main island in Hawaii at 7:07AM local time on Sunday, October 15. The earthquake resulted in no reported deaths – only minor injuries such as broken bones.

No player or coach injuries were reported – none of the teams play within an hour’s drive of where the earthquake occurred.

Described by some residents as having a jackhammer-like rhythm, the earthquake literally shook people out of bed, as it registered a Richter scale reading of 6.6 and lasted about a minute – the most violent shake on the island in more than 20 years.

As a result of the plate tectonic movement and the damages it caused, Sunday’s (10/15) games were rescheduled to Tuesday. The scheduled Tuesday games were moved to Wednesday, becoming part of a set of seven inning double-headers. Monday was a scheduled off day.

Incase you missed it last week, here’s a link to our HWB Prospect Watch List.

MLB Prospect Highlights: 10/16-10/22

Waikiki Beach Boys

  • Dexter Fowler (OF, COL) went just 2-11 on the week with a single and a triple. He stole one base and was caught stealing once. Fowler’s average is down to .333 (16-48).
  • Still not playing often, Jeff Clement (C, SEA) went 0-5 with three strikeouts and no walks during the week. Our top catching prospect in the game entered the second game on Wednesday in the 6th inning and played the entire game Saturday.
  • Eric Young Jr. (2B, COL) stole four bases on the week without being caught, giving him a total of 6 sb in 10 games. Shark’s outfielder Morgan Nyjer (PIT) leads the league with 9 sb.

West Oahu Cane Fires

  • Ian Kennedy (RHP, NYY) started the first game in Wednesday’s double-header, and didn’t give up a run in 4.0 innings, as he struck out seven batters while walking three and giving up two hits.
  • Not as successful as his fellow Yankee right-hander, Joba Chamberlain gave up two runs (both on solo home runs) on three hits in 4.0 innings. But the 6-foot-3, 225-pound Nebraska native did not walk a batter and struck out six.
  • John Mayberry Jr. (OF, TEX) went 5-12 with three doubles. He’s now batting .364 with a .940 OPS in 22 at-bats.
  • Making the most of his two starts, William Venable (OF, SD) went 4-8 with two doubles – he did strikeout four times, though. Venable is now 11-33 (.333) overall.

North Shore Honu (name means green turtle)

  • Mike Carp (1B, NYM) went 5-12 with a double and a triple. Carp is now hitting .323 (10-31) with four extra-base-hits.

 Honolulu Sharks

  • Eric Campbell (3B, ATL) had just two hits in eight at-bats, but one of the hits was a home run and the other was a double. His batting average is now down to .267 (12-45).

Ocean Cruise:

  • Cole Garner (OF, COL) is the only American baseball player on the island with more than one home run (2).
  • The Cane Fires are in first place with an 8-5 record. In a tight four-team race, the Sharks are at the tail end with a 6-9 record.
  • Player of the week honors for last week have still not been given. None of the players on our HWB Watch List received player of the week honors during the second week of the league, as Steve Lerud (C, PIT), Kanehisa Arime (LHP, JAP), and Takanobu Tsujiuchi (LHP, JAP) were recognized. Dexter Fowler and Vanden Hurk (RHP, FLA) gained week one honors.
  • Our prospect of the week award goes to Ian Kennedy (4.0 IP, 0 runs, 2 hits, 3 BB, 7K).
