The Golden Standard

May 29, 2007
In 2006 and at 32 years of age, Jermaine Dye broke out for a career-high 44 HRs to go with a career-best .622 SLG
pct. At 33 years old, Magglio Ordóñez has a career-high SLG pct., is on a career-high HR pace, and currently leads
the majors with 41 RBIs, making him this season's Dye. As if his success in his early 30's wasn't enough to make
that comparison, Dye and Ordóñez both share the same exact date of birth: Jan. 28, 1974. All of this wildness
equates to Ordóñez being Project Prospect Writer Michael Gehlken's biggest riser.

The Golden Standard Draft Board is based on the basic 5x5 fantasy scoring settings, and its format is modeled
after Yahoo! Sports' Brandon Funston's Big Board.

Michael Gehlken's Golden Standard 5x5 Fantasy Board

No.   Player   Notes Prev.
1   Álex Rodríguez, NYY   Four HRs and two SB in last nine games gives him a chokehold on board's top spot 1
2   José Reyes, NYM   SLG pct. has dropped below last season's, and only one RBI in last 10 games 2
3   Albert Pujols, STL   Fantasy volcano ready to erupt: 12-for-28, with one HR in last seven games 3
4   Carlos Beltrán, NYM   Has one of baseball's better balanced 5x5 games:.296/31/8/33/7 4
5   Vladimir Guerrero, LAA   Only thing age has affected is SB output: just two attempts (one SB) so far 5
6   David Ortiz, BOS   Smashing righties with all nine of his HRs and a .339/.466/.703 line 6
7   Miguel Cabrera, FLA   Solo shot on Friday ended 14-game power drought 7
8   Chase Utley, PHI   Hasn't attempted to steal one bag in 18 games, but OPS is continuing annual ascent 8
9   Alfonso Soriano, CHC   On Friday had first multi-steal attempt game since Aug. 27, ending a 69-game drought 9
10   Travis Hafner, CLE   2006 home line: .319/.454/.664; 2007 home line: .217/.411/.377 -- but it's starting to come around 10
11   Mark Teixeira, TEX   Calendar's been pushed back: First multi-HR game in '06 was on Aug. 26; first in '07 was on May 20 11
12   David Wright, NYM   Thru May 25, has doubled .311 April SLG with a .622 May SLG 13
13   Matt Holliday, COL   Feast-or-famish in '07: currently on 11-game HR drought and was on 20-game drought earlier in year 14
14   Carl Crawford, TB   On pace for first 100 RBI season, but 100 runs on track to elude him for second straight season 15
15   Justin Morneau, MIN   Has taken a step back v. lefties but remains dominant v. righties (10 HRs with a .316/.401/.641 line) 17
16   Johan Santana, MIN   Still boss in pitching, but 10 straight starts with a BB is by far longest single-season streak of career 18
17   Grady Sizemore, CLE   Opened season five-for-eight, 2 HR v. LHP; is 9-for-54, 0 HRs since 19
18   Jimmy Rollins, PHI   Zero HRs, one SB in last nine games, but such periods of cooling are expected 20
19   Carlos Lee, HOU   Seeing the ball well of late: only one K in last seven games (26 ABs) 22
20   Prince Fielder, MIL   Not slowing down: three HRs in last five games 31
21   Aramis Ramírez, CHC   Continues push toward 40 HRs, and we're not even close to July (20 HRs last two years) 24
22   Hanley Ramirez, FLA   Even after that three-RBI game on May 23, those 12 RBIs hurt too much to start talking top 20 21
23   Jake Peavy, SD   An effective part of his game: has allowed at least one BB in all 28 starts since June 23, 2006 23
24   Manny Ramírez, BOS   One HR last 15 games; been fighting to stay patient, but something just feels off this season 12
25   Lance Berkman, HOU   Was a May bloomer through first nine games, but has since reverted to April funk 16
26   Roy Oswalt, HOU   Like Santana, allowing at least one BB in all of season's starts (11) is atypical 25
27   Jason Bay, PIT   Two-for-three, two-run, HR, two-RBI game on May 26 is first sign of real life in two weeks 27
28   Magglio Ordóñez, DET This season's Jermaine Dye? They do both share a Jan. 28, 1974 birthday… --
29   Ryan Howard, PHI   Welcoming him back to the board, but he is going to have to work his way back up DL
30   Ichiro Suzuki, SEA   As expected, back to usual self. Not expected: he's hitting .409 at home and just .267 on the road 33
31   Félix Hernández, SEA   Looks like he could have used another rehab start or two before coming back from injury DL
32   Brandon Webb, ARZ   After 10-K win: 10 Ks, 9 ER, L in two starts 30
33   Vernon Wells, TOR   Unmemorable May: One HR, 0-for-3 in SB att., and a .228/.282/.316 line 28
34   Cole Hamels, PHI   Raw, but comes with the potential of a 15-K CG every time he's on the mound 34
35   Adrián González, SD   I have a reverse hometown fantasy bias with Padre batters, but the former 1st overall pick is legit 39
36   Paul Konerko, CWS   Hitting .400 with five runs in the four games since Thome's May 20th return 46
37   Chipper Jones, ATL   Pressing the panic button after cortisone shot to hand, and can you blame me? 26
38   Russell Martin, LAD   Same type of fantasy game as Mauer but more HRs and SBs thus far 35
39   C.C. Sabathia, CLE   Yesterday's five-strikeout start ended six-game streak of seven or more Ks 37
40   Victor Martinez, CLE   Seven HRs and 36 RBIs in 39 games 47
41   Dan Haren, OAK   Has won last five decisions and leads MLB starters with a 0.89 WHIP 49
42   Torii Hunter, MIN   Never underestimate a contract-year player that is nicknamed "Franchise" --
43   J.J. Hardy, MIL   Hit 14 HRs in 159 games in first two MLB seasons; has hit 15 HRs in first 46 games of '07 48
44   Andruw Jones, ATL   0-for-5, 5 K game on May 20 at Fenway says it all for '07 season struggles 32
45   Jeremy Bonderman, DET   Has received 9.25 runs of support over last four starts (3-0) 42
46   Daisuke Matsuzaka, BOS   Season's ERA may never level out while in AL East divison, but wins, Ks should be there 40
47 Carlos Guillén, DET Six-for-11, five runs, two HRs, and six RBIs in last three games --
48   Matt Cain, SF   May be figured out: all 23 of his earned runs have been allowed off an 0-0 swing 36
49   B.J. Upton, TB   Got a little overexcited over the 22-year old with last week's ranking; long power slumps inevitable 38
50   Garrett Atkins, COL   One HR since Apr. 14, but expecting him to eventually erupt for another big second half 41

Waiver Wire Wrestles of the Week
Position elibility is based on (liberal) Yahoo! settings.
Pos.   Player   Notes
SP   Justin Germano, SD   2-0, 0.47 ERA in three starts of Clay Hensley-replacement; could keep rotation spot upon his return
SP   Yovani Gollardo, MIL   MLB debut may be soon; worth a pick-up if you like upside in your fantasy rotation
SP   Sean Marshall, CHC   Looked awfully sharp in first MLB start of season against the Padres
RP   Kevin Gregg, FLA   Manager Fredi Gonzalez's flavor of the week
RP   Henry Owens, FLA   Still think he will come out of the Marlin closer mess on top; will return from DL at anytime
1B   Ryan Garko, CIN   26-year old is hitting .395 with 12 runs, 4 HRs, and 12 RBIs in May
2B   Kaz Matsui, COL   Recenty returned to Rockie line-up (back spasms); he's a poor man's Hanley Ramírez
3B   Ryan Braun, MIL   A run and 2 RBI in first MLB start; the 23-year-old rookie had 10 HRs in AAA before May 24 call-up
3B   Kevin Kouzmanoff, SD   Three HRs last four games; he's startable in all formats right now
3B   Mark Reynolds, ARZ   23-year old Chad Tracy-replacement has a .459 AVG, 10 runs, 3 HRs, and 11 RBIs in only 10 games
OF Brad Hawpe, COL Was high on him in the off-season; he's starting to come around (four HRs, .319/.413/.565 in May)
OF   Jeremy Hermida, FLA   Only a matter of time before he gets hot and showcases multi-talents at the MLB level
OF   Hunter Pence, HOU   For those who didn't get the memo: picking up Pence is a good idea
