This past week we saw some big names get added to the injury report. Wladimir Balentien (No. 21), Jose Tabata (No. 36) and Deolis Guerra (No. 48) were all bit by the injury bug, some more severe than others.
The Tacoma Rainiers got a major scare out of star outfielder Wladimir Balentien on August 10th. The future M’s star misjudged a ball hit his way, attempted to recover, and was left trying to make a diving catch with all of his weight coming down awkwardly on his wrist. The ball got by Balentien, who was in such pain that he couldn’t get up to get the ball into the infield. The Tacoma trainers originally feared Balentien had a broken wrist, however they soon realized that no damage whatsoever occurred to the wrist and that Balentien merely had a dislocated little finger. Word is that he will miss two to three weeks to let the finger heal, which is quite a sigh of relief at this point.
Jose Tabata’s injury went from being ‘foggy’ at the beginning of the week to unfortunately clear come Friday afternoon. It is now being confirmed that Tabata will miss the remainder of the year while recovering from having his hamate bone removed from his right wrist. This injury has likely been a major reason for Tabata’s subpar power numbers this season. So despite the grim news it is more than likely for the better at this point.
Rumors are flying wildly around the Internet this week in response to some postings that stated Deolis Guerra might be shut down for the season. While the Mets have offered no confirmed reports, it is safe to say that Guerra’s shoulder tendonitis is nothing the Mets want to mess with. With that said, it appears that the Mets have merely moved him into a relief/brief starting role in order to limit the number of innings on his shoulder. The bigger issue is just how bad this shoulder tendonitis may be now and in the future. We hope this is not an injury that plagues him throughout his career. Jered Weaver has a similar issue, which has caused him to miss time in each of the last two seasons. The biggest fear right now is that with the more innings a pitcher logs, the worse the tendonitis will get. Hopefully the Mets are being smart in continuing to let this kid pitch rather than shutting him down altogether.
A few other injuries to make note of are Chris Garcia (knee surgery), Tony Sipp (Tommy John surgery) and Dexter Fowler (hamate bone).
The Yankees got slammed with the double-whammy this week in losing right-hander Chris Garcia to knee surgery. Garcia had been in the process of rehabbing from Tommy John surgery when he suffered this setback. Reports state that he will now be shutdown until November. The Yankees do not fear that this is that much of a concern, however as he was only rehabbing to keep his body in shape at this point. He is expected to fully recover and be ready to go come Spring Training.
Tony Sipp is the unfortunate victim of Tommy John surgery and will not even begin a throwing and conditioning program until July of 2008. This setback prevents Sipp from contributing at any point next season and more than likely prevents his making an impact with the Indians until mid-Summer of 2009. This is a truly unfortunate blow to an Indians bullpen that certainly could have used his arm down the stretch run this year and certainly next season. Sipp’s tag as the Indians’ Closer of the Future is now completely up in the air.
Finally, Dexter Fowler broke his pisiform bone back in June while making a catch and running into the outfield wall. The break required two pins to be inserted into his right wrist. This is fortunately not a break that is not uncommon to baseball players by any means, so he should recover well from it. While it was originally thought that Fowler was to be back by no later than mid-August, it now appears far more likely that the Rockies will hold him out until the Arizona Fall League season begins. This setback does not appear to be enough to keep Fowler from advancing to Double-A next season, but his performance in the AFL and early on next season should be closely watched to see if this wrist injury saps any extra-base power that he had.
Now, onto the list itself. So that you do not have to sort through the list each and every week, all new additions have been placed up front. All players on the lower portion of the list have already been seen on the list and have no significant updates. All players are shown with their most recent Project Prospect ranking.
And as always, do feel free to request additional information or to have a player added to the list in the upcoming update. You can reach me at: BTCharpied@projectprospect.com.

Injuries not listed last week/injury updates
Top-75 No. | Player | Pos | Injury | Age | Org | Level | Out Since | Return |
24 | Wladimir Balentien | RF | Dislocated Little Finger | 23 | SEA | AAA | 8/10 | Early September |
Balentien made a poor judgement on a fly ball, attempted to correct himself and fell hard on his hand while diving. Fortunately, it was only a dislocated pinky and not a broken wrist. Balentien will be out two to three weeks according to The News Tribune.
36 | Jose Tabata | RF | Wrist & Hand Injuries | 18 | NYY | A+ | 8/9 | No Timetable |
This hand and wrist injury is becoming quite the problem for the amazingly talented OF. Although unconfirmed, belief is that this is the same injury that hit Tabata earlier in the season. Hopefully this time off is what he needs to get back into form.
48 | Deolis Guerra | RHP | Shoulder Tendonitis | 18 | NYM | A+ | Playing | Playing |
Rumors are swirling around about Guerra's status. Surgery? Rest? Perfectly healthy? All we know right now is that it appears Guerra is fine, despite rumors (and stats). The Mets seem to have decided to just limit him to a handful of innings each outing.
53 | Hank Conger | C | Left Hamstring Strain | 19 | LAA | A | 8/6 | Late August |
This is Conger's second DL stint this season (lower back strain). The catching prospect was just settling in at the plate, batting .382 with 6 rbi's over his last 10 games. Only 2 K's in his last 34 at bats (only 1 walk during that time as well).
71 | Ryan Sweeney | LF | Wrist | 22 | CHW | AAA | Playing | Playing |
The White Sox outfield prospect was placed on the DL last week due to a nagging right wrist injury. It appears to be fully healed and he began taking batting practice with the Triple-A club on Friday.
NR | Matt Mangini | 3B | Chronic Back Pain | 21 | SEA | R | Playing | Playing |
Original word was that the Mariners were shutting Mangini down for the season after his back pain flaired up yet again, but he was recently moved to the AZL and then on to High-A where he will work on strengthening his core while still playing.
NR | Dexter Fowler | CF | Broken Pisiform Bone | 21 | COL | A+ | 6/17 | Arizona Fall League |
Fowler broke his pisiform bone while crashing into the outfield wall. The break required to pins to be inserted into his wrist. While it was expected that the Rockies would bring him back in mid-August, they thought it better to hold him out until the AFL now.
NR | Chris Garcia | RHP | Knee & Tommy John Surgery | 21 | NYY | A+ | Season | Spring Training 2008 |
The knee was a minor setback that won't set the timetable for this talented arm back at all. Look for Garcia to continue the success he had in 2006. He will not continue rehabbing again until November. His elbow is on track for Spring 2008.
NR | Tyler Clippard | RHP | Strained Neck | 22 | NYY | AA | Playing | Playing |
Clippard returned to the mound on August 14th in a promising performance. While only going 2.2 innings and giving up 2 ER, he allowed just one hit, a walk and had 5 strikeouts. It was his 2nd start with Trenton since being promoted.
NR | Glen Perkins | LHP | Strained Shoulder | 24 | MIN | MLB | Playing | Playing |
After suffering a setback to his recovery in mid-July, Perkins returned to the mound on the 9th. He only pitched 2.0 innings, but was impressive and efficient in the short outing. Expect Perkins to rise up fast through the system in the coming months.
NR | Andrew Brackman | RHP | Tommy John Surgery | 21 | NYY | R | Season | Late 2008 |
The Yankees 1st Round Pick agreed to a Major League contract that could be worth up to $13.8 million. The irony of it? He was down in Birmgingham being consulted by Dr. James Andrews for his assumed TJ surgery.
Old Injuries | ||||||||
Top-75 No. | Player | Pos | Injury | Age | Org | Level | Out Since | Return |
13 | Homer Bailey | RHP | Groin Strain | 21 | CIN | AAA | 7/17 | Most likely mid-September |
This is Bailey's second strained groin on the season and may cause him to stay in Triple-A for quite a while. He is just now beginning his throwing sessions off of a mound; however, no timetable has been set for his return
14 | Fernando Martinez | CF | Fractured Hamate Bone | 18 | NYM | AA | 7/30 | Spring Training 2008 |
Hamate bones are particularly tricky. While a player suffering from a broken hamate bone can come back to play within a few months, it typically saps the players power for up to 16 months.
40 | Brett Anderson | SP | Concussion / Arm Fatigue | 19 | ARI | A+ | 7/27 | No Timetable Set |
While Anderson was already being scheduled to be briefly shutdown due to arm fatigue, he ended up suffering a mild concussion while in a car crash with six teammates. Anderson can be expected to return to the hill reasonably soon.
41 | Adam Miller | SP | Elbow Soreness | 22 | CLE | AAA | 7/19 | Instructional Leagues? |
The Indians are going to be cautious with this one, as this is the same elbow inflammation that caused Miller to miss the first half of the 2005 season. In all liklihood, Miller will not see the majors this season and may be prevented from throwing at all until Instructional Leagues kick in.
43 | Carlos Gomez | LF | Fractured Hamate Bone | 21 | NYM | MLB | 7/4 | Spring Training 2008 |
Perhaps the Mets should invest in hamate bone insurance? Their second OF prospect to go down with this injury, and like Martinez, Gomez will be out for the rest of the season. Expect Gomez ready to go by next spring or in the Arizona Fall League.
64 | Scott Elbert | LHP | Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery | 21 | LAD | AA | 4/16 | Spring Training 2008 |
The Dodgers' top pitching prospect is out for the year after finally going under the knife in June. Scarring was found on Elbert's labrum, prompting the need for surgery. Elbert should be ready by next spring; however will not be allowed to throw again for several months.
67 | Scott Moore | 3B | Unknown Injury | 23 | CHC | MLB | 7/24 | No Timetable Set |
Apparently, no specific injury has been specified; however, he has been out of action since July 24th. We will fill you in as soon as we find out exactly what is going on; however, if it were something major, I am sure we would have heard about it by now.
69 | Jaime Garcia | LHP | Elbow | 21 | STL | AA | 7/18 | Spring 2008 at the earliest |
The Cardinals have to choose between bad news or worse news for their prospect's ailing elbow; rest or surgery. The Cards are opting for the former, but it is looking like surgery might be the end result. If so, Garcia will more than likely be out for all of 2008.
71 | Ryan Sweeney | LF | Wrist | 22 | CHW | AAA | Playing | Playing |
The ChiSox OF prospect was placed on the DL last week due to a nagging right wrist injury. It appears to be fully healed and he began taking batting practice with the Triple-A club on Friday.
NR | Joaquin Arias | SS | Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery | 22 | TEX | AAA | 6/29 | Late September |
Arias had suffered what Texas GM Jon Daniels described as "just a little bit more than normal wear and tear." The Rangers hope to have him back on the field by late September; however, expect him to be out until 2008
NR | Thomas Diamond | RHP | Tommy John Surgery | 24 | TEX | AAA | Season | Spring Training 2008 |
In a surprise to even the Doctors that operated on him, the supremely talented Diamond needed Tommy John Surgery. He will be back and ready to go next Spring, as Texas will look to add him to their rotation mid-year if all goes as planned.
NR | Anthony Lerew | RHP | Tommy John Surgery | 24 | ATL | AAA | 5/20 | Mid-August 2008 |
Lerew clearly was not his usual dominant self during his short stint with the Braves earlier this summer, which was later confirmed by Lerew's need for TJ Surgery. Lerew will look to take the mound again sometime in the late Summer of 2008.
NR | Humberto Sanchez | RHP | Tommy John Surgery | 24 | NYY | AAA | Season | Spring Training 2008 |
Sanchez was supposed to be to the Yankees what Joba Chamberlain is having to do right now -- be their verion of Joel Zumaya. With his elbow at last repaired. Sanchez may at last be able to stay on the mound for more than a few months at a time.
NR | Jeff Niemann | RHP | Shoulder Fatigue | 24 | TAM | AAA | 7/30 | Mid-August |
Given the long history of injuries this big Texan has been hit with over the years, simple "shoulder fatigue" is a sigh of relief. Niemann will only miss two starts, so look for him to be back on the bump by next week.
NR | Greg Reynolds | RHP | Shoulder Tendonitis | 22 | COL | AA | 6/19 | Spring Training 2008 |
Reynolds' shoulder was causing him discomfort all year long, so shutting him down for the remainder of the season was a smart thing for the Rockies to do. Hopefully the talented 1st rounder can return to form in 2008.
NR | Dellin Betances | RHP | Enflamed Right Elbow | 19 | NYY | A | 7/15 | No Timetable Set |
Don't be surprised if the Yankees shut down their 19-year old flamethrower for the rest of the season. Throwing in the high-90s, the 6' 7", 185 lbs. Betances puts a tremendous amount of strain on his elbow, thus the injury. Better to be safe than sorry when you have a talent like this guy.
NR | Kyle Drabek | RHP | Tommy John Surgery | 19 | PHI | A | 6/15 | Late 2008 |
The Phillies' 2006 top pick had to undergo surgery in July which will put him out for most, if not all, of 2008. The team says it doesn't expect this year off to set Drabek's progression back any, so expect him to advance into Double-A in late 2008.
NR | Shane Lindsay | RHP | Surgery on Frayed Labrum | 22 | COL | A | Season | No Timetable Set |
Lindsay had surgery on a frayed labrum last October and was expected to begin throwing again in March. It is now August and the Rockies seem to be hush-hush on Lindsay's status. Assume he is out for the year until we hear otherwise.
NR | Brahiam Maldonado | OF | Fractured Metacarpal - Middle Finger | 22 | NYM | A | 8/4 | Late August |
The Mets surprising 10th rounder has done nothing but dominate down at Class A Savannah since signing. A damaged metacarpal is not uncommon and should not be looked upon as a major injury. Brahiam will be back in action soon.
NR | Landon Powell | C | Torn ACL | 25 | OAK | AAA | 7/2 | Spring Training 2008 |
Only days after getting promoted to Triple-A Sacramento, Powell went down with a torn ACL that will keep him out at least until next spring training. Powell has been a promising prospect for the A's, but his age coupled with his injury certainly do not bode well for his future.
NR | Ryan Kalish | CF | Fractured Hamate Bone | 19 | BOS | A | 7/16 | Spring Training 2008 |
What is it with OF's and hamate bones? After an absolutely torrid Class-A campaign (.368 / .471 / .540), Kalish will attempt to pick up next year where he left off. The bone was not displaced, therfore surgery is trying to be avoided since the injury heals much better if healed naturally.
