TIM MELVILLE SCOUTING REPORT: 3-25-08
OPPONENT: FT. ZUMWALT NORTH

The basics

Fastball: Sat around 91 in early innings. Velocity decreased to 88 in later innings. Did not locate fastball very well, especially to arm side. Missed up in the zone often. Fastball touched 93 early in this outing.

Changeup: Used rarely, only late in this outing. Simply a show pitch once hitters began looking fastball early in counts. Arm speed slowed when this pitch was thrown.

Curveball: Best pitch in this outing. Thrown as first pitch of an at bat nine times. Melville actually commanded this pitch better than any. Curveball had significant break and came in around 72-74. Good job of pulling down and not letting it roll.

Delivery: Fluid, easy motion. 3/4 slot. Left himself in good fielding position. Has a good frame and seems projectable.

Fielding/Holding runners: Only tested in the field twice. Made a nice backhand flip to home on a squeeze play. Covered first on a routine grounder to first baseman. Average running speed. Paid a lot of attention to runners. Step-off move was average. Looked back to second with a runner on second very late in his delivery. Had to find his target very late. Not very quick to the plate. Did allow one stolen base.

Other observations

Weather Conditions were low 60's with wind at 20-25 mph at times.

Pitched behind in the count often. Had 12 first pitch strikes. Allowed six walks.

All five hits allowed were legit, however poor defense by the catcher did result in runners moving up on two passed balls.

Five outs were in the air. Three strikeouts were swinging. Prior to the game Melville was heard saying "There are more scouts here than fans."

Showed good hitting ability. Homered on the first pitch he saw to dead center. Added an RBI double and was issued an intentional walk.

Hustled at all times....in the field, on the basepaths, coming onto and off of the field.

Overall, undone with control problems. 47 balls thrown in this outing. Moved to first base when the bullpen took over. His pitching line: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 6 BB, and 6 K.
