We were expecting big things from Lorenzo Cain in 2009. But instead of a breakout, we witnessed more of a breakdown. The 23-year-old was limited to just 42 regular-season games thanks to a hamstring injury that was followed by a knee injury. And when Cain did step up to the plate (160 times), he wasn't the same hitter he was at the end of 2008.
Cain has displayed a well-rounded approach to hitting and some pop in the past. He's also an above-average runner who could stick in center field.
Now playing in the AFL, Cain is someone who we plan to watch closely during our time in Arizona. The Brewers have requested that he be given playing priority with the Peoria Javelinas -- according to MLB.com, Cain will play in at least four games a week this fall.
He could move into the Brewers' big-league plans in a hurry, as he's part of a small group of near-big-league-ready center fielder prospects.
"I'm not a spotlight guy. I like to just sit back and relax and let the other guys have the attention," Cain told Lisa Winston prior to the start of the 2009 season.
Well Mr. Cain, you may not have been featured in the spotlight much this season, but that could change in a hurry.
