Daniel Descalso Video

December 10, 2009

Descalso won the 2nd round of our AFL video request balloting, which I've been conducting through Twitter.

The 5-foot-10, 190-pounder surprised some people when he was selected in the 3rd round (112th overall) of the 2007 Draft out of UC Davis.

He's an adequate, though unlikely to be better than average, defender at second -- 75% of his starts in the minors have been at 2B.

As you can see in the video, Descalso, 23, is a balanced hitter with a quick bat. He's at his best when he's spraying line drives all over the field. Selected to play in the 2009 Rising Stars game, he's an elite contact hitter with some patience and below-average power, though he made the most of his time in HR-friendly Springfield (.208 IsoP).

A fringe-average runner, Descalso is a likely big leaguer. His power development will be key in determining if he can perform enough to become a MLB regular.
