Adam's all-sleeper prospect team

February 14, 2010

I've had a sticky note of sleeper prospects on my desk for two months now. Sticky notes get lost and aren't as good as a published record of thoughts. So I've remedied the situation. The players below are some of my personal favorites to take big steps forward in 2010. Some are under-the-radar, some are already getting some hype, but I don't think any of them are widely thought of as top 25 prospects.

C - Wil Myers
1B - Ryan Strieby
2B - Alexia Amarista
SS - Drew Cumberland
3B - Carlos Rivero
CF - Mike Trout
OF - Kellen Kulbacki and Nick Weglarz
P - Mike Leake, Zeke Spruill, Stolmy Pimentel, Michael Pineda and Henderson Alvarez

Note that not all of these positions are going to hold true. Myers may not be a catcher, Cumberland may be a second baseman, Rivero didn't play much third base until the 2009 Arizona Fall League and Weglarz may be too slow for the outfield. I thought the starting lineup format was a bit more fun than an alphabetical list.

Also, there are three 2009 draft picks listed above (Myers, Trout and Leake). All of them were early draft picks, so how are they sleepers? I'm thinking along the lines of acknowledgement of elite prospect status by most prospect sources. There's still a lot of unknown with those guys -- yes, even Leake.
