Though my focus is typically only on a handful of players when I visit minor league camps, there are times when guys I hadn't planned on watching closely steal the show.
Meet Jose Rivero. Meet superhuman bat speed.
I first saw Rivero swing it after watching Michael Choice take batting practice. As impressive as Choice's power display was, it wasn't even on the same tier as Rivero's.
The Venezuelan-born outfielder began his pro career as a 17-year-old outfielder in the Mariners organization. This year is his first with the A's. He has opened the year in Low-A and could easily finish it in High-A or maybe even Double-A.
Rivero's swing isn't pretty and he doesn't have a great body, but I'll be surprised if his bat speed doesn't get him to the big leagues. Don't expect him to be a well-rounded hitter who provides much value with the glove. Do expect him to send his share of balls into orbit.
